What We Are Learning

Unit of Inquiry: Sharing the Planet

We will inquire into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things. The central idea of this unit is that conservation protects the environment.

Students will inquire into the following questions:

  • How is our Earth healthy? (Function)
  • What do humans do to harm/protect the environment? (Causation)
  • Why is it important (for you) to protect the Earth? (Reflection)

 

Additional questions:

  • How do we know an environment is healthy?
  • What is pollution? What are the types of pollution? (air, land, water)
  • What is overfishing? What is deforestation? What is extinction? What are endangered species? How does an animal become endangered?

Unit summary:

Explore the ways in which humans harm healthy environments (deforestation, land, air, and water pollution)

Students will create an All About book/poster/video about ways to conserve and protect the environment (ocean, marine life, trees, air quality, etc.).

Summative assessment task:

Explore how humans can protect/conserve the environment: reduce, reuse, recycle.  Explore healthy environments and the living things that live there.

Writer’s Workshop Key Points

    • Think
    • Draw
    • Add Details
    • Label and/or write a sentence
    • Color We are continuing to improve our ‘How to’ books as we teach the class what we know. This week we will focus on vocabulary development as we will use the following words in our writing: first, second, last.
    • We are practicing the following with our sentence writing:
    • “How to” books
  1. Begin each sentence with a capital letter.
  2. Put finger spaces between our words.
  3. Put a period at the end of each sentence.

 

 

What You Can Do to Help Your Child

  1. RAZ Kids! Don’t forget to have your child read a few RAZ Kids books each night. I have really noticed a difference in reading confidence when students practice reading at home. These books reinforce what we are doing in the class and will greatly assist in your child’s reading progress. If you have any questions, please let me know.
  2. At-Home Reflective Writing Journals– The students tell me that they have been writing in journals at home. This is wonderful. They can even bring them in to school to share from time-to-time. If your child does not have one yet, it can be just a plain notebook. They can write about anything in English or Arabic. Students can write anything. The most important thing is that they are WRITING!
  3. Practice sight words with your child. I sent home two lists, one for KG1, the other is for KG2. If you need me to resend them to you, please contact me. Remember they only need to read them. Play a game with them. For example, put each word on a card or paper. Hold up each card one word at a time. If they can read it, they keep the card. If they cannot read it, you keep the card. The person with the most cards wins the game. (This is a game I don’t mind losing!)
  4. Practice CVC Words also known as ‘word families’: such as, sub, tub, cub. For more information regarding CVC words, please see the following link:

Number Decomposition – Practice decomposing the number ‘7’ and ‘8’
Counting numbers – Up to 100
Writing numbers – Up to 20
Number representation – Up to 20
Shapes(2D/3D) – Identifying and describing the following shapes: square, circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, cubes, cones, cylinder, sphere

 

What You Can Do to Help Your Child

At-Home Writing Journals – Please continue to have your child write at home for a few minutes each night. It can be just a plain notebook. A math journal, or problem solving notebook as they are sometimes referred to, is a book in which students record their math work and thinking. They can be used to:

  • Practice drawing shapes.
  • Writing numbers to 20
  • Practice decomposing numbers
